King's Day -Be Aware

This might be a little late, but this weekend, April 27th to May 1, is King's Day in the Netherlands. Amsterdam will be packed with people intent on 4 days of partying! The transportation system will shut down. No trams or taxis. The streets will be jammed.

I worked this out a couple of weeks ago when I tried to rejig my regular Spring week in the Netherlands and couldn't find a place at a decent price any of my usual hotels. So trip's off for this year.

I've experienced Queens Day (now changed gender because of the new King) in Amsterdam and in Haarlem and other places and I'll let others have the fun now.

Thanks for the post, Kateja...

I think we've been seeing signs that the trains are running but no trams, busses and taxis. Our Leiden friend says that trains leaving Amsterdam in particular might be an annoyance though because of overcrowding and inibriated passengers. I think we'll stick to the smaller cities tomorrow...

I was supposed to have been on the RS 21 day Best of Europe tour that starts there on the 29th. Wonder if that gums up the activity schedule or gives those folks an extra special treat. hmm? ( knee injury cancelled our travel plans)
Hoping to do the trip next year around the same time.

Is King's day to be avoided or enjoyed?

I’m staying in Haarlem and plan to get out and about and see some local color. I plan to visit the Frans Hals Museum today after learning they are open today.

I think it will be fun to be here so I’m looking forward to a new kind of travel memory. All in all, I plan to relax and enjoy.
I spent the last couple days in Amsterdam and saw the signs Mona mentioned about trams, buses and all public transport in the city center not running today.

We’re in Delft today on the Belgium/Holland tour. Lots of people in the streets, food vendors, music, families, and plenty of “yard sale” stuff. Of course Delft is small compared to Amsterdam, but it seems like a lot of family fun right now, and I’m pretty sure King’s Day is just 27 April, not the whole weekend (officially, at least). I’m sure it will get crazier as the evening comes and more people are drinking. Fun day!
