anyone familiar with using kindle fire for acquiring internet access while traveling to italy....rather then bringing laptop or iPad....thought it would serve purpose of being able to read and yet get on line when needed... thanks

I used the fire in France and Germany. It is not perfect, but will get the job done. You may have a problem with some of the Italian wireless networks.

I have a 3G, old style, Kindle and had no problems with access to the internet in Italy. On the Kindle site it tells you about coverage by country. However, I found it very clunky to use but maybe that's me so I also take my netbook along.
