Keep your eye on Canada to US flights and vice versa

My son was notified by Air Canada today that the second leg of his Montreal to Toronto, Toronto to Indianapolis flight was canceled. It seems that they will get him to Toronto and then refund (?) some of his 1 stop Montreal to Indianapolis flight, purchased as one ticket. There were 6 family members with various US, Canadian and German passports on this flight to a family reunion. The Canadian contingent may rent a van and drive the group the final 8 hours, Toronto to Indianapolis. It is messy but very understandable.

He probably has the option of canceling the entire ticket for a refund. Then rebook with a different airline. Several American airlines have flights out of Montreal.

It's been known for a while that many airlines (both US and Cdn) are reducing the number of flights between the 2 countries. It's bound to affect passengers with reservations made months ago. It's a good warning to always keep an eye of any future flights.

Delta, American and United all show 1 stop service for Montreal to Indy.

If he had a single ticket for the 2 flight itinerary, I find it hard to believe he cannot get a full refund and just start over with another airline.

He’ll probably have these options. They were all at work today when they got the news of the one leg of the flight being canceled.

A few years ago I had booked a flight from Calgary to Glasgow with a connection in Halifax. My Calgary to Halifax was cancelled but not my Halifax to Glasgow. I phoned and it was explained to me that the computer see's 2 different flights and sometimes doesn't understand it's one ticket. You'd think that's kind of important for it to understand. Moral of the story is you sometimes have to call.

Unless it’s a lot more money Delta via Detroit is the obvious choice for a substitute.

Did they give a reason? I just booked a nonstop round trip ticket from Indy-Toronto for next month.

Did you book with Air Canada Lulu? The airlines are reducing the number of flights between countries but, so far, only a few routes have been eliminated completely.
