KD river cruises

In the brochure that I recieved with our rail passes, it states that KD Rhine Cruises are free for pass holders. Is this correct?

If you are using a day of your railpass that day, the KD boats are just like a train ride, but you do have to use a day of the rail pass. The general rule is, "free" travel can be used on any day when you have validated the pass, discounts are for any day for the entire validity period of the pass.

Lee said it perfectly. As long as it's part of a day using the pass, yes it's free. It's not free on days that you are not planning to use the pass and you need to buy a ticket.

Yes it is, when using your pass for the day. I had a 30 day pass last year, and I stayed on the Rhine for 10 days and used it for each day to go to different cities/towns on the Rhine. It was really fun, and an easy way to enjoy the Rhine. I also used it to go to Koblenz and Mainz by train during this time. Have fun.

This is from the Eurail website, "There are a few rules concerning benefits. Free benefits can only be used during travel days, discounted benefits can be used during the overall validity of the Pass." If you are not using your pass that day, but do take the train to get to the K-D boat, the Bahn ticket is supposed to get you a 20% discount for you boat ticket. It doesn't specifically say a railpass will get you the discount, only a Bahn ticket. Start in St. Goar, buy a ticket to Bacharach on the train for €3,20, get a €2,10 discount on the boat back to St. Goar.

Lee, so does this mean that with local train tickets you get the discount on the KD river cruise. Does this same discount apply if you just have an IC ticket?

All I know is this is what the website says, "At each KD landing stage you will receive a 20% discount off the KD schedule tariffs when you present a valid German Rail ticket." I've never actually tried it. It seems surprising to me that they would give a 20% (€5,60) discount, for example, from Bacharach to Koblenz, with a €3,20 ticket from St Goar to Bacharach, but that's what is seems to say. An IC ticket would at least be more. . . . . . ¶ BTW, I think of all the stops between Koblenz and Mainz, Bingen Stadt might be the only one which you can get to by IC. The rest you would have to arrive at by regional trains.
