K-D Rhine Koblenz

I will be taking a train from Cologne to Koblenz. How can I get to the Koblenz K-D Rhine boat dock from the Koblenz train station?

Easiest way is by taxi. Its only about about a mile away, so the taxi cost should be well less than 10 eu. There are city buses as well, but you need to buy a ticket, change buses downtown, and figure out how to do all that, so a taxi makes the most sense. Spend a little time on the water front. The Deutsche Ecke monument is interesting. I don't know if the aerial tramway over the Rhine to the hilltop fortress is still running. It was put up in 2010 for a big international flower show and was only supposed to be temporary, but who knows. If its running, set a side a couple of hours to take the ride over and back.

If you will be satisfied with about an hour "highlight reel" of the middle Rhine, I think it's a good suggestion to take a regional train to Bacharach or St. Goar and take the KD only for the relatively short leg between them. That stretch has more castles close together than most of the Rhine. Going against the current will be a little longer ride, with the current will be faster. From Koblenz, you are going against the current and consuming quite a bit of time. The dock is walking distance from either the Bacharach or St. Goar stations.

The tramway is still running. Here is the website: http://www.seilbahn-koblenz.de/prices.html Brad's point being its just a slower journey upriver than down. However, I'll wager that there will be fewer hoards of tourists that jam on the boats at Bachrach and leave as soon as the boat has passed through the most scenic parts of the Rhine Gorge. They all do the same itinerary downstream (heading North).

Yes, for sure. The scenery from Koblenz to St Goar is just OK. From St. Goar to Rudesheim is the famous Rhine Gorge with the Lorelei, Castles, fast water that is in the Vacation brochures. The standard mass tourism route is as follows: tour bus drop off at Rudesheim, board boat and ride to St Goar running from side to side of the boat to take pictures, disembark at St Goar onto waiting tour buses to take to castle tour.

Thanks again Sam. Do you know how I can get to the St. Goar train station from the Dock?

The train station in St. Goar is a couple of blocks uphill from the K-D dock, just behind the church. You can probably see it from the town square, which is next to the dock. There is a pedestrian underpass to get to the Mainz-bound platform. Here is a url for a map of St. Goar: www.st-goar.de/files/a-z-st-goar-2013.pdf.
