We will be flying AA from Edinburgh, Scotland to Philadelphia with a layover in JFK. Will we need to pick up our bags and recheck them at JFK or will they automatically be transferred to PHL since we are flying same airline all the way through? TIA
You'll have to get your bags at JFK to go through customs/immigration, since it's your entry point to the US. But the rechecking might be easy, as they might have a system for immediate rechecking after going through customs. That's what happened to us returning to the US through Philadelphia.
Pat, are you arriving at JFK and departing to PHL from the same terminal? I ask because if you are changing terminals, you will need to allow time to do it as will involve the Airtrain to get to the departing terminal and waiting at security again.
Either way, the checked bags will be handled in the same manner. The bags will be tagged for Phil, on landing at JFK you will go through immigration, pickup you checked bags, walk through customs, drop you checked bags on the other side, and exit. You are now outside of security. Go to your next gate but you will go through a TSA check point prior to your gate.
Thank you all for your responses. I'm glad we gave ourselves plenty of time for layover.
