We are a family of 5 flying into Rome-spending 3 days in Rome, 2 in Venice, a week at a Timeshare near Salzburg and two days in Fussen flying home from Munich. With this being the order of places, what would be most economical/easiest for travel? We need to get from Rome to Venice, then Venice to Salzburg-then from Salzburg to our timeshare which is in Saint Martin B Lofer (2o min or so from Salzburg) would like to visit Salzburg, Hallstat and other day trips from our Timeshare, then onto Fussen and finally to Munich to return home.
Are you asking if you should rent a car? With a timeshare 20 minutes out of Salzburg and given all the places you want to travel I would rent a car once you get to Germany. Someone here with great train knowledge can help you get to Germany where you can pick up a car and then leaving it in the same country will not be outrageous, even though you will be driving to Austria. The drive to Salzburg and the surrounding area is quite easy and very beautiful and allows you the freedom you might need for grocery shopping, etc. for your timeshare. Sounds like a great trip.
I thought we may need a car in Austria by why wouldn't we just rent it in Austria and return before heading to Germany?
If you check the rental prices on Autoeurope.com, you'll probably find it's cheaper to rent and return a car in the same country. I think that's why TK suggested you pick up the car in Germany.
If you are coming from Venice, the best route to St. Martin might be to take the EC (EuroCity) from Verona to Innsbruck (one EC per day actually starts in Venice, otherwise take an Italian train to Verona). In Innsbruck take a regional Austrian train to Saalfeld. There is a bus from Saalfeld to St. Martin. Once in St. Martin, there is a bus to Bad Reichenhall, in Germany, where you can take the train to Berchtesgaden or Salzburg, or you can just stay on that bus to Salzburg Hbf.
I'd take the train from Rome to Venice. http://www.italiarail.com/city-city-tickets A quick search showed tickets for between $103 and $63 per person depending on how early you book. The trip would take about three hours forty-five minutes. It's about 300 miles by car, so I'm not sure a car would be any cheaper, even for five. Train would certainly be less stressful.
I think from what Ive read that the train from Rome to Venice, bus and train to Salzburg where we rent a car, then we can take a bayern train ticket to fussen would be wisest? Where do we rent car in Salburg? Do they have car rental right near train station?
