After leaving Paris, I'd like to see the major cities in Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice, Cinque Terre), the Swiss Alps, and I'm flying out of Munich. Any suggestions on the most efficient itinerary and transportation modes (train vs. plane vs. both)? I have 12 days to get from Paris to Munich. Thanks in advance!

That's a lot of destinations for 12 days. Figure 1/2 day for travel to each one. Rome 3 days, Florence and Venice 2.5 days each equals 10 days, and that's probably a bare minimum to appreciate them at all. That leaves you 2 days for the Alps and to get to Munich.
You will probably get more/better info if you re-post this on the Italy (boot) helpline.
