We are a group of 5 university students with 3 days in/around the Naples area Oct 10-13, then returning to Austria. We are looking at Positano and Sorrento for the 3 days, but would be interested in any other recommendations for the area. Thanks!

Of course you can go to Pompeii. Although we loved Positano, I think you might be bored there as not much to do but shop and eat. For your age, might have more to do in Sorrento. Suggest you post this question on the section of this site just for Italy and might get more responses. Just based on my daughters thought of Positano, she was bored after the first day that is why I suggest Sorrento.

Stay in Sorrento, take ferry to Capri from Sorrento (if weather cooperates). Take train to Pompeii and Herculaneaum. Climb Vesuvius, visit the Nsples Archaeological Museum. Sorrento doesn't have a beach but if weather cooperates worth going to Positano for its beach.

Another option for a day trip out of Naples. If you wanted to stay away from the hoards of tourists on the island of Capri, try the island of Ischia. Especially if you like thermal spas
