Italy - Transportation

I'm looking for recommendations on the following 2 travel questions. While googling I see there are several different travel options,
but I'm hoping to get first hand experience and opinions/recommendations. What has been your experience?

  1. Getting from Rome Fiumicino airport "Leonardo da Vinci" to Central Rome. Specifically I'm considering Hotel Smeraldo.
  2. How to get from hotel to the Port of Civitavecchia cruise terminal.

2 adults with backpack luggage. Arriving on a Monday morning at 8:00 am. Departing on Thursday mid morning for cruise port.

I've also posted on the General Italy Travel Forum.

You will get many different answers. Mine is simply based on personal preference. A private car service from the airport to the hotel is, in my opinion, well worth the money as it only cost a little more than a regular taxi. After a long flight, being tired, jet lagged, having to handle luggage, and on unfamilar ground, there's nothing better than having a driver meet you in the terminal, escort you to the car and whisk you to the hotel. We've used Rome Cabs (a car service despite the name) a number of times and have always been pleased. Their wev site is romecabs.com. We send an email explaining our needs and get a reply within 24 hours.

Taking them to the cruise port can be done, but it is very expensive! Take the train instead and then a taxi to the cruise port entrance. It can be done on foot, but is a bit longer than it used to be, and we're a bit older.

After up to 24 hours of traveling, when we arrive in Rome FCO we get a private car transfer to our downtown hotel.

Suggest you check out the Leonardo Express train from FCO to central Rome for fast, inexpensive transfer. Then, grab an Uber or Taxi to your hotel.

I too have used the car/driver option to get you to the hotel. I have used Welcome Pickups as well as Rome Cabs, both are reliable companies. I have stayed at the Smeraldo and they took care of getting me a taxi to the Termini Station to get the train to Civitavecchia. Just be aware that the station is some distance from the port and transportation, either bus or taxi is notoriously elusive. I was lucky in that I met up with some other passengers on the same cruise and we lucked out with a taxi for €10. Happy to pay that on a hot afternoon. Read up about the port itself. Depending on your ship and where it is moored, you may need to walt for a shuttle to take you to its place on the pier. Better to plan on an early arrival at the port to allow for that eventuality.

The train from Rome to Civitavecchia takes about an hour and a half. There are various bus options that take about 2 hours. Taxi will be around $200……..
