Italy Train Reservations (Rome to Naples)

My wife and daughter will be arriving by air in Rome on April 17th. From the airport they will use the Leonardo Express to get to Rome Termini where they will catch a train to Naples and then on to Sorrento. Since they are flying and scheduled to arrive in Rome at 12:30 that day and then to allow time for customs, train to Termini etc... I'm uncertain about buying a ticket/reservation prior to departure since I don't really know which train they would catch. Schedules appear to run about every 30 minutes. So real question here is do I need to have a reservation (and what hassles to change it if flight is late or whatever) or can they expect to make a reservation using the machines at the station and get a ticket when they arrive without problems?

TIA
Ron

I suggest that they buy their Rome-Naples tickets at the airport when they buy their tickets for the Leonardo Express. Based on which Leonardo Express train they take, it will be easy for them to choose which will be the earliest Rome-Naples train they can book.

I agree with Tim. Buy your tickets for the Rome/Naples journey when you buy the Leonardo tickets. Note that the Leonardo journey takes 30 minutes to Rome Termini. I would suggest when buying the Rome/Naples tickets that you not schedule any closer to 1hr. from the time the Leonardo Express is scheduled to depart. The reason is that you will have seat reservations on the Rome/Naples train and if you miss that train, it's a hassle to reschedule.

CLICK HERE to see that afternoon Rome/Naples train schedule for 4/17. I suggest that you circle a list of possible trains and make the final choice when you step up to the ticket window. The ticket agent will take care of your seat reservations for you.

Once in Naples, you will need to change to the local Circumvesuviana where you will journey for another 70 minutes to Sorrento. No reservations for this train.
