We are in Italy now. The train ticket from Venice to Rome is $42. We would like to throw a stop in to Florence. Can we get off the train in Florence since it's on the way, then continue on the last leg of the trip the next day using the remainder of the trip we have already paid for or do we forfeit it by not using it the day we validate it? Just asking. Thanks for the advice.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Each day of travel is a day of the rail pass. If you go from Venice to Rome in one day it's one day of the pass. If you go from Venice to Florence in a day, that's a day of the pass. If you travel from Florence to Rome the next day, that's another day of the pass.
Need a clearer question since this one is not making a lot of sense. Do you have a train ticket or a train pass? Is the $42 the price of the ticket or the price of the required when using the pass? As a guess -- if you have a reservation for a specific seat on a specific train between Venice and Rome. If you get off in Venice you lose the balance of that reservation and will require a new one the next day. If you have an IC or regional train ticket, I believe, it is valid for 24 hrs so you could probably do that but you would have no seat reservation.
