Hi Michelle. By train! There are many comfortable, high speed trains per day along these routes. Use web site trenitalia.com. Use italian spellings venezia, firenze, roma. Enjoy your trip!

If you are willing to accept double the travel time and additional train changes, you can ride the Regionale Veloces or InterCity trains for half the cost of the high-speeds. Or, if you are willing to lock yourself into non-refundable and non-exchangeable tickets, you can get great economy fares on the high-speeds that will beat the fares on the Regionales and Intercity fares. You have to book early for these great fares. With more information on your travel dates, we can tell you how to get these fares.

Michelle, Bob & Larry give you excellent advice. Most visitors tend to ride the high speed trains and now you have a choice between Trenitalia and Italo (the private company). In Rome, Italo stops at Roma Tiburtina, not Roma Termini Station, should that may be a consideration as it might require a metro ride - or longer taxi ride to reach your accommodations.

Unfortunately best and cheapest don't often share the same bed. If they do it is because of lots of pre-planning. With your trips so soon it may be difficult to get cheapest for the best - the high speed trains in my mind - as many of the cheapest high speed tickets will have gone. As far as staying cheapest with most flexibility then it is the slower Regionale trains. Older equipment, maybe air conditioned, possibly not - OK probably some coaches yes, some no - lots of stops but closer to the common man and more time to see the scenery as it rolls by (OK, you're rolling but you know what I mean).
