Hi. Looking on trenitalia site, and for some trains it offers a 'CarteFrecciaDay' fare, (example Florence to Rome May 28 at 12:40), but for the life of me I can't find any explanation of rules for that fare. Italy train experts - can you help?
My Italian is not all that sharp, but It looks like you just need a Carta Freccia. It is a loyalty program. You can request a card on the Italian website. See the Cartafreccia button on the menu bar? Gonthere and then press Dettagli
(details). At the bottom of the page, press Aderisci to get the registration for. For "provincia" scroll down through the Italian places to Estero. That will bring up a long list of countries, including Stati Uniti (United States). I did not go past that point to figure out how you actually get the card, but I assume your registration is confirmed with a membership number that you can use to get the special fare. It is worth a try.
It is a discount card that gives you 50% off for travel on Freccia trains on Saturdays. You can read about it under "offerte" on the Italian website. The English version doesn't mention the Carte, but they do describe the Sabato Italiano offer for 2 for 1 travel on Saturdays. If there are two of you traveling, you could book that.
Lola - thanks for the info!. Looks like the 2 for 1 offer isonly good thru June; we are traveling in July. Any idea how I would find more info (in Engliish) about whether I can buy the CarteFrecciaDay fare?
Lola, thanks for the info and encouragement. I did some exploring in the Italian portion of the site as you suggested. The United States option you mention occurs under a 'place of birth' section. A second section asks for 'place of residence' and then adds the instruction that 'it must be in Italy'. So it seems like this may be limited to Italian residents, which would make sense since it isn't promoted in the English portion of the site. Any other Italian train experts - can you confirm or clarify?
