Italy to Switzerland to Germany : Another Eurail Question

We usually like to rent a car when we travel to Europe because we like the flexibility. This year we are going in winter though and are concerned about driving the Alps in winter weather. So, we are looking at the Eurail pass for this trip and I just want to make sure that I am not missing any additional legs that would be an additional cost. Here are our travel days:

1.) FCO to Florence
2.) Florence to Lucerne
3.) Lucerne to Wengen (I understand in this part the leg from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen is additional, correct?)
4.) Wengen to Garmisch Partinkirchen
5.) Garmisch Partinkirchen to Munich

The cost for two adults for the five day, three country pass is $779.

Please let me know if I have missed anything.
Thanks in advance.

I assume you've checked the price of the rail pass with the costs of point-to-point tickets? Advance-bought tickets for Fiumicino to Florence is EUR 49 for you together, and a Regio-Ticket for Garmisch-Partenkirchen to München EUR 23.

You have at least two inexpensive trips there. Hard to believe the pricey rail pass makes economic sense, especially if you plan to lock down your itinerary well in advance and could take advantage of promo tickets (non-refundable/non-changeable) purchased soon.

April, A Eurail pass stops at Interlaken, beyond that (Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen and Lauterbrunnen to Wengen) you only get a discount. A Swiss pass is valid all the way to Wengen. The normal price for this leg (from the Swiss Railways site http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html ) is:

  • Luzern to Wengen (full fare, 2nd class) is: CHF 46,40
  • Interlaken Ost to Wengen: CHF 14,40

One pass day = US$779 ÷ 5 = US$ 155,80 + 75% of CHF 14,40 versus CHF 46,40

I seriously think you should look up the prices for normal tickets for each of these trips. It is likely to work out a lot less than a pass.
If you are planning to use a lot of cable cars or other local transport when in Wengen, another option is a Berner Oberland pass, plus normal tickets for your other trips. Details here:

"another option is a Berner Oberland pass"

AFAIK, the Berner Oberland and Jungfrau Regional Passes are not sold in winter. They end each year in about October and resume in about April. Check the websites to confirm.

You will probably want to get a full fare ticket from Fiumicino to Florence as a prepaid Economy ticket becomes worthless if you flight is delayed and you miss the train. Price is 106 EUR for 2 bought at the airport.
Florence to Luzern can be bought in advance for 118 EUR for 2.

Keep in mind, even with a rail pass you will need to buy reservations for Fiumicino to Florence of 10 EUR per person, reservations for the Florence to Milan leg of 10 EUR per person and about 8 EUR per person for the
Milan to Luzern leg. These reservations are included in the price of purchased tickets.

You can get advance purchase discount tickets at SBB for the Wengen to Innsbruck leg for 120 CHF for 2, then a 30 EUR flexpreis ticket from Innsbruck to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

And if you do opt for a railpass, they are on sale until the end of the year for $662.

Thank you for all of the feedback. I should have said that our trip begins December 6, so we can get some advance fare, but not the full 60 day. I guess that I am still looking for the same flexibility as having a car and just booking at the last minute as we go while we are in Europe. I know that I can book at least two legs now, so I will grab those now.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

If you're considering a 3-country Select pass (currently 5 days for $308 per person in 1st class), then you'd want to check your route options from Wengen to Garmisch. Some connections use the Railjet train running through Austria's Tirol (pay a couple of bucks from the border at Mittenwald and a separate ticker from Garmisch to Munich) and others are mostly within Germany (and just a $5 portion of Austria between St. Margrethen and Lindau; you can buy that part of the ticket in Switzerland). Or the cost to have all 4 countries covered on the pass is $337 for 5 days.

If (perhaps) you qualified for a 2nd-class youth pass, then the Leonard Express shuttle train to Roma Termini would not be covered, since its an "all 1st class" train.
