Italy to Ljubljana by train

We are traveling from Italy to Ljubljana by train in October. We will be moving from Vicenza towards Slovenia and could go from either Venice or Trieste. One guidebook mentions a train from Venice (dep 9am) to Ljubljana (arr 1:14pm). I have an older Thomas Cook timetables book that references a train from Venice (dep 9:35) to Ljubljana (arr 14:50). The only trains I can find online are nighttrains and 7, 8 or more hours with multiple stops and/or bus transfer connections. Has anyone had experience with more direct trains or the ones mentioned above? PLEASE NOTE: I HAVE AN ANSWER AND SOLUTION.
Thank you for your replies. I am leaving this out here in case anyone else might have a similar question.

The Trenitalia website shows only the night train you mention. However, the www.bahn.de website shows 10 runs from Venice to Ljubljana. I see one run with a duration of 5:04hrs. There's even a night train run that departs Venice at 21:27 and takes only 4.5hrs. No train changes on this run but the arrival time is 1:51am.

Hi Greg,

the direct daytime trains between venice and ljubljana stopped running in april this year, so the info in your guidebooks is now slightly out of date.

Do you have to travel by train? there is a direct bus from trieste to ljubljana, which leaves trieste at 2pm and arrives ljubljana at 16.46. I think it costs about 10-15 euros. Heres the bus service website. http://www.ap-ljubljana.si/eng/.

Greg,

There used to be 2 direct trains between Venice and Ljubljana a day, but they cancelled the daytime train back in April.

In May I took a connecting train Venice to Villach and then Villach to Ljubljana.
Check this route:

Venice to Villach dep 14:44 arr 17:40

Villach to Ljubljana dep 18:04 arr 19:48

Had no problem with this route although it happened that when I travelled part of the track between Villach and Ljubljana was under works so we were switched to a bus for a portion of the journey. Still arrived by 8:30 pm even with the bus connection.

Thank you Laura. I have noted that route. Since I posted we have decided to try something different. We have decided connect with a train in Treviso after spending a day there.
