Italy-Spain Ferry Routes

I'm thinking about taking a ferry from Livorno to Barcelona. Does anyone kinow if the ferry route heads straight across the open sea, or does it hug the coastline? The trip includes an entire day (as in daylight) on the ferry, and I'd rather be able to look at the Riviera/Costa Brava than stare at the open water!

I took a ferry from Civitecchia to Barcelona on July 30 with Grimaldi. It did not "hug the coastline" but went straight out across the Mediterranean. I do not know about any other ferry, just Grimaldi.
