Italy - Rome to Sorrento

I will be in Italy in May 2012 and I am looking ahead as to how I will get from Rome to Sorrento. The Curreri Viaggi is not running at this time and according to the email I received from them, it may be up and running again come April. Can anyone tell me the best, easiest, and cheapest way to get from Rome to Sorrento and back to Rome again. Should I buy my tickets in advance? I have read some stories about WW2 bombs being found and grounding transportation to a halt. I would hate to have that happen as I have hotel reservations and cannot afford to hire a private driver. Thank you all in advance for your advice.

Lisa, As mentioned in the previous reply, one of the easiest methods is to take the EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale. When you arrive, go downstairs and transfer to the Circumvesuviana commuter train. Note that they have several lines, and Sorrento is the end of the line on the route you'll be taking. Are you going to be in Rome a few days prior to your trip to Sorrento? There are always differing opinions on the subject, but I wouldn't bother buying tickets in advance for the ES/AV train. I would simply buy at the station a few days prior to travel, either at a staffed ticket window or from one of the Kiosks. I'm not sure if it's possible to purchase Circumvesuviana tickets online, so I'd buy them when you arrive in Naples. I've never heard of any cases where transportation has ground to a halt due to WW-II bombs. I suspect that doesn't happen too often, so I wouldn't be too concerned. A more likely scenario is a Sciopero or Strike. Use the same method for the return trip to Rome. Happy travels!

Thank you both for responding so quickly. I will be in Rome for about 5 days before heading to Sorrento. So, I will purchase my ticket at that time if you do not feel it is necessary to purchase ahead of time. I am traveling by myself and just a bit apprehensive about getting around Rome. Although, I am excited at the same time. I cannot wait for my trip. Your advice was wonderful and I thank you both again. Have a great day!

You could also take the train from Rome Termini station to Naples Central station, then go downstairs and change for the Circumvesuviana train for Sorrento. For Rome to Naples train info, check the Trenitalia (national rail company) website. The Circumvesuviana is a private local line. It's a fairly easy journey, even though (as discussed occasionally on this bulletin board) Rick Steves' warnings about safety/theft on the trains has some travelers worried...Read his book for more information. I'm not sure about the WW2 bombs stories, I haven't heard about that.

You can also take the slower commuter train from Rome to Naples for about half price but it does take half to 3/4 hour longer but for us was worth the savings. Be sure to validate your ticket before you get on train, the machine is just as you get to tracks.

Well, I am taking all of your advice. I will purchase my tickets once I get to Rome as I have hired a driver in Sorrento for 175 euros to take me down the Amalfi Coast for 6 hours. So I am going to need to get there in time for pick-up and to arrange a taxi. I heard it is good not to leave calling for a taxi to the last minute. Thank you for all your advice. I do appreciate it.
