Italy flights pricing/timing

Hi. We are traveling to Italy (flying into Milan) at the end of August. We have been watching flights for the last several months and prices seem to be on the high end and going up. We are only buying one way tickets, as we used miles for our return flights, and to get decent flights we are looking at a minimum of $1100-$1200 each, and that's booking through JustFly. Going directly through a carrier that we will get miles with, it's $1800+. We went at the same time last year and our flights were about $300 less than what we're seeing now, booking directly through Delta at about 8-9 weeks prior to our trip.

We are currently about 14 weeks out. So my question is, can we expect prices to drop in the next 4-6 weeks with prices more in line with what we paid last year? Or are flights higher this year?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You don't say where you are flying from. Makes a HUGE difference.

I booked JFK-MXP a week ago on Emirates for $963 RT 21 July return 14 August for wife and I. Will take the train from DC to NY. It looked like there were lots of seats. Candidly I've just about given up on using miles except between October and April. It's gotten to be too much of a hassle. Last award tickets I booked were for wife and grandson RDU-PMO/FCO-RDU around Thanksgiving last year--80,000 points apiece. Had tried to do it around August of 2014 and they wanted almost double!

Flying from Seattle you might take a look at Air Canada out of Vancouver.

That is probably correct from the west coast, we bought our tickets from SF last January on United, started at a base of 1400.00 and added about 350.00 each ticket to upgrade to economy plus round trip. I think the winter months are the best time to buy no matter when you are going. These tickets we bought were for May.

I booked 6 months before our flight and paid $1350.00 each LAX-Rome coming back from Paris for October flights. II purchased when I saw the right combination of Price, flights and layover times. I don't understand buying just one way tickets??? I purchased part of our tickets rewards and bought RT/Multi-leg flights all at the same time and used my points (the price of $1350.00 is without points). My rewards converts points to cash and just subtracts what I have to give me a final out of pocket price.

Judy--was that round trip?

Letizia--the airline I have miles with only allows you to book partner flights through miles. You cannot purchase through them, and we only have enough miles for one way.

Last month, we booked Denver to Venice, return from Milan in October for $1335.

Ck1 -- maybe you should consider paying cash for two round-trip flights and save miles for another trip? Or one RT for cash, one for miles if you could get the same flights? One-way flights can br pricey!

Have you looked at Condor? They route you SEA to Frankfurt nonstop and then on to Milan from there. They don't fly the route everyday so you're somewhat limited. But I can see that, as of tonight, they'll sell you SEA to MILAN on Aug 26th for $1039 in coach class or $1209 in Premium Economy.

Hi ck1. It doesn't seem like you are getting any value out of using your miles one way. I don't know your dates, but since you said you are going late August, I picked random dates of Aug 25 - Sept 8 and I'm seeing round trip on American from Seattle to Milan for $1,111. Can you cancel your miles transaction and just buy round trip?
