Need to rent a car this July from Florence to Milan. Any suggestions?
- Check with highly recommended AutoEurope. Great prices and customer service.
- Get your International Driver Permit from AAA.
- Opt for the added $0 deductible insurance to avoid stress.
- Become familiar with ZTL’s and traffic cameras.
Check rates with AutoEurope. Get the “no deductible” coverage. Become VERY familiar with the rules of the road, especially related to pedestrian zones and environmental zones. Do not drive into the city centers. Always have some change available for tolls.
Consider whether you REALLY need a car, or is it just what you are used to. Can you travel by train instead? It really is easy, if you travel light and aren’t exploring little villages.
Expect a souvenir in the mail about a year later: a traffic ticket.
Are you just driving between Florence and Milan? If so, I would take the train. There are high speed trains that go multiple times a day.
If you can, avoid a car rental for this. It's a quick trip by train.
I agree with Jeff that if you are only driving between these 2 cities, taking the train makes much more sense.
I used gemut.com, which is a travel agency based in the US. They were very helpful.
About renting in Italy: if you are using your credit card 's insurance, ask them if they covery Italy. I heard that some plans exclude it.
