Italy; train and rental car combo

I am travelling to Rome, Florence, and Alba in Sept-Oct. We fly into Rome and out of Milan. I was planning to take the train between Rome, Florence, and Milan, pick up a rental car in Milan and travel to Alba. We would return the rental to Milan prior to our flight out. Does this seem like a logical approach? Can I pick up a car near the Milan train station and drop it at the airport?
Thanks, Aileen

Hi Aileen. That plan should work fine. Try Hertz or Avis web sites, they will let you get quotes or reserve. The car will be manual transmission unless you specify otherwise. Also see 'how to rent a car in Europe' info in Travel Tips section of this web site for more info.
Enjoy your trip!

Aileen, Are you aware of the usual "caveats" regarding driving in Italy? If not post another note for the details.

Ken is wondering if you aware of the ZTL hazard that goes with driving in Italy. The train takes 4:28 if you take the 8:30 train from Florence to Torino. One more change at Bra. Surely this faster than taking the train to Milan, getting to the rental car place, getting through the paperwork ( took us 30 minutes) and driving to Alba.

I've read the info on renting a car, so feel ok there. Was mainly wondering if there was a quicker way to get to Alba. Seems like the train from Florence to Alba will take longer than going to Milan and driving to Alba. Thought I might get a better rental deal if I pick up and return in the same city.
