ItaliaRail legit?

Does this site sell legitimate tickets for train travel in Italy? Seems that most people only mention Trenitalia.

Hi Brad. I haven't used it, so can't say for sure. But did you now trenitalia is the train company? Tickets are easy to buy on their site with no markup or service charge, so not sure of any reason to buy thru a third party.

The reason Trenitalian is mentioned is because it is the national railroad system of Italy. Other than a few, private, mostly commuter lines, it is the only railroad system in Italy. When you buy from Trenitalia you buy direct. Everything else is a travel agency -- ItaliaRail, Rail Europe, Eurail, etc.

I agree that ItaliaRail and RailEurope are price-added resellers of tickets from the national rail companies in Europe, but Eurail does not sell tickets like the other two do. It only sells rail passes, which it packages and markets. As they say on their website, " We are a subsidiary of the Eurail Group, which is a cooperation of 30 European Railway companies and shipping lines.". I saw a twitter saying they were less expensive than Trenitalia, but when I compared tickets from the two for one popular route, at today's exchange rate, ItaliaRail was about 5% more expensive for most type (savings, normal, flexible) and class (1 or 2) from Trenialia. In addition, ItaliaRail charges $5 for handling of etickets. As Frank says, "when you buy from Trentalia you buy direct".
