Italian Train Site

Any suggestions for what site to use to get prices and book tickets for train trips inside Italy? For some strange reason, I cannot access the Trenitalia site. My computer keeps saying 'unable to display webpage.'

Seems to be working from here. You might want to try the direct link at http://www.ferroviedellostato.it
Don't forget, the Trenitalia website won't take American credit cards, so you'll only be able to get pricing, not buy tickets.

Just tried that site...no luck...maybe my computer doesn't speak Italian.

It may be a temporary problem with your ISP.
If you want to check schedules only (not prices) you can use the German national rail website.

And as Norm stated earlier, you can't buy tickets online. YOu need to wait until you get there but you shouldn't have a problem. And you do know most schedules (actual availability) can only be checked about 3 months ahead of time.

Not necessarily true. I have bought tickets without any problems with a US credit card (admittedly back in 2007). I know some people have had problems, but others have been successful.

Two year old experiences doesn't count especially when dealing with money. Within the past year or so, the Italian train site has not accepted US credit card for internet purchases. US cards are still accepted in train stations.

Cindy,

In reading over your posts on the difficulties you're experiencing with the Trenitalia website, one thought that occurred to me is that it may be a problem with your ISP. Which net provider are you with?

I've heard of users experiencing problems with AOL and a few others, so that might be the problem. One example that comes to mind is problems that were reported in accessing the BattleBus.fr website. I'm able to access the Trenitalia site (and others) with no problems at all.

As an "experiment", you might try to access the rail site from a friend's PC (one that uses a different ISP) or perhaps a Library or Net Cafe (again, using a different ISP). Browsers are fairly "universal" these days, so it shouldn't matter whether you're using a PC or a MAC.

Good luck!

Some trouble displaying some European web pages are due to older browsers, resolution, etc. To rule that out as your problem: make sure you are running the most current Internet Explorer with all service packs installed. Then, turn your monitor resolution down to no higher than 1024 x 768.

It is also possible you'll have to go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, and check what file protocol / international settings you have enabled. You'll start to exceed my knowledge at this point, but I'll try to pester a turbo-geek greater than myself to assist.

Jim, thanks for the info...still no luck...even tried on my daughter's brand new laptop. I went into tools and clicked every box for international and restarted...wondering if there is a specific box that needs to be checked/unchecked. Does anyone know?
