The Italian train system will update it's schedule on June 10th of this year and I need to know when I can purchase Super Economy tickets from Milan to Florence and then from Florence to Genoa and finally from Genoa to Milan.. I assume that the normal four month advance purchase will not be available. Can I safety buy them say in May with the safety that the existing trains will still be there on the new schedule?
Trunk line trains like Freccia and Intercity trains should be on the schedule well before the June 10 date. If it is a Regionali, which involve state subsidies, that get held up until the last minute.
Remember that if you cannot buy a ticket because it has not been posted to Trenitalia's system, neither can anyone else. Just check each day, and buy when the ticket you want is released.
lisa,
The trip from Milan to Florence will be via Freccia high speed train, and as the others have mentioned, tickets for those may become available earlier than for the Regionale trains. Note that Super Economy tickets are non-refundable and non-changeable, so choose carefully.
The other two routes may involve a combination of fast trains and Regionale trains. There are no discounted tickets for the Regionale trains, so it doesn't matter whether you buy those in advance or when you arrive in Italy, as the price will be the same. If you buy Regionale tickets locally, be sure to validate prior to boarding the train on the day of travel or you'll risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot!
When are you traveling. If they are getting updated normally it is done for a few months ahead, so if you wanted to travel on the 11th June they would not normally change it the day before.
Not sure of your exact date of travel, but for the Milan to Florence run you could also check Italo (a competing company) for costs. They appear to have their schedule up past June 10th now.
Not sure when you are needing your ticket from Milan to Florence, but my daughter (who lives in Milan) called me yesterday and tole me there was a special sale on train tickets to Florence. As I already purchased my tickets, I did not bother asking about which train line but I could ask her if you are still looking to purchase your tickets.
Would love to know a bit more about the sale prices from Milan to Florence that you mentioned. I have seen a price of 19.90 Euros for an afternoon express train on the 12th of September and thought it to be an excellent price.
That €19,90 is a Super Economy fare for Sept. 10. It will not get any cheaper than that.
Trainline.eu is showing fares as low as €8 between Milan and Flor nice on unspecified dates, but their ticket sales include bus lines as well as trains. I will bet the lowest fares are for the bus.
