I have friends who are going to be traveling from Venice to Rome via Florence. They've never been to Europe and are in their 70s. They want to see Florence and spend a day in Rome before flying home to US. How can I find them the best, safest and cheapest train ride.
If all you're asking about is advice for the train, just tell them to buy their tickets when they get there. It's very easy and can be done with US credit cards there, but not online. There are dozens of trains on those routes.
Since they're starting in Venice, it would be very easy to stop at the train station when they arrive and look at the schedules and price options. They could buy their tickets then and avoid last minute confusion. But, really, it's very easy to travel that route by train.
Most of the trains from Venezia Santa Lucia to Firenze are EuroStar Alta Velocita trains. Travel time is 2hr3min. The 2nd class fare is €42. There is one IC (InterCity) train that departs at 13:07 with a travel time of 3hr10min. The 2nd class fare is €22.50.
Most of the trains from Firenze to Roma also are ES AV trains. The trip takes 1hr35min and the 2nd class fare is €44. IC trains make the run in 3hr14min and the 2nd class fare is €26. R (Regionale) trains make the run in around four hours and the 2nd class fare is €16.10.

Thanks to both of you.
