Italian bus travel

In late Sept we are based in Siena for 4 days preceding a bike tour of Tuscany that originates in Figline Valdarmo
Sunday at 12;30 pm. We will not have a car and I am wondering if we can take the bus to Florence and transfer somewhere to get to Figline. Insights greatly appreciated.

Carrie: Bus travel in rural Italy on Sundays can be a problem, schedules are different. There's train service connecting Florence's Campo di Marte train station to Figline Valdarno (and BTW it'll help in your online trip planning if you know the correct spelling of Valdarno), just takes 20 to 35 minutes by train from Firenze (Florence) to Figline. It may also be possible to go from Florence to Figline by bus--I don't know, have not done that--I'm pointing out the train option because people here have found that getting Tuscany bus schedules online is difficult--whereas you can use this website to look at the train schedule between Florence and Figline now instead of not knowing until you get to the Florence bus station on the day of: train schedule websiteTo pull this off without a hitch, you're going to need to pay attention to these details: Get to the correct Florence train station, the one you need is not the main Florence station. Get to Florence by taking the train from Siena if traveling on a Sunday, by bus if not traveling on Sunday (the faster corse rapide buses, not the diretta buses). Take a cab from the Florence bus station to the Florence Campo di Marte train station. Then the train to Figline.

My wife and I took the bus from Siena to Florence last month. Was very easy and inexpensive. It runs several times per day, it's reasonably nice (comparable to a typical charter bus that a group might rent in the U.S.), and it takes just 75 minutes. As the previous poster commented, it drops you off right near the Florence "Santa Maria Novella" train station, but that may not be the station you would need for your transfer.

If you want to travel from Siena to Figline on a Sunday morning, the SITA bus schedule shows no Sunday morning express buses from Siena to Florence. You could take a local bus to Florence and then train to Figline Valdarno or the Trenitalia website shows 2 Sunday morning trains from Siena that have a change at Florence's main train station. Trenitalia website is www.trenitalia.it.

Can't answer as far as schedules but we used two different bus lines--from Rome to Siena and then another one from Siena to Florence---and thought they were very comfortable and clean. I liked it much better than the regional Italian trains.
