We are planning a trip to Israel next year, April 2009. We'd like to spend about 2 1/2 weeks there. Do you recommend getting a hotel for the whole time as a home base, and then take day trips with a rental car? Or should we get hotels in each destination, Jerusalem, Netanya, Sea of Gallilee, etc.
This forum is called EUROPE through the back door, not Asia for insiders!
You could also take Mary's question as a generalized question regardless of the destination. Homebase with day trips or stay as you go?
How far away are the day trips? Then you must decide what is reasonable travel time/cost per destination. It comes down to the math and logistics of it all. It's a good skill to develop so you can calculate advantages and disadvantages of having a Home Base while abroad.
You probably need to stay in a couple of places -- somewhere around the Sea of Gallilee and also in Jerusalem. There are many day trips available from Jerusalem, but the Sea of Gallilee is not one of them. Staying in a kibbutz on the Sea of Gallilee is a very educational experience.
We were in Israel for 32 weeks in November.
We stayed in Tiberas(Sea of Gallile), Ein Bokek(Dead Sea)and Jerusalem.
We took day trips from all those areas.
I would suggest staying in each of the cities you have name and take day trips.
Whatever you do it will be a beautiful experience.
Dear Andreas from Frankfurt Germany,
We understand your hatred for Israel. You continue to post your hatred whenever Israel is mentioned in any of the forums on Rick Steves’ website. Rick Steves has articles on Israel on this “European” website, so why do you continue to visit his website? I will give you this that your fellow countrymen did do a good job in removing Jews out of Europe ( and the world). Yet Israel & Jews are still tied to their European roots. Too bad for you. Vinnie
Rick Steves’ writes on this “European” website:
“Tourists become pilgrims at Jerusalem's Holocaust Memorial, Yad Vashem. All visiting heads of state are brought here. A museum tells the history of the slaughter of six million Jews by Nazi Germany. Seeing art inspired by the suffering of those persecuted and murdered in concentration camps — from adults to children — is a fine way to be sure that we heed the final wish of the victims of Nazism that we "never forget."
Vince,
Andreas made his one-sentence post three weeks ago. Also, its just one post; I don't see any "pattern" here??????
Vince, Andreas was merely trying to keep the focus on the purpose of this helpline -- European travel. I don't believe there was any need or cause for your personal attack on what you assume to be his beliefs. And as Michael says, Andreas made his comment over three weeks ago! Andreas is a long-time member of this helpline community and has been tremendously helpful to a great many here as the "go to" guy for information about Germany and German travel. Rick Steves does mention many other places in his articles and podcasts, but Europe is the focus here. Please refrain from personal attacks, particularly when you don't know Andreas or his beliefs.
