is train travel in and out of rothenburg a pain?

does anyone know if getting in and out of rothenburg too much trouble for side trips? Were thinking of basing ourselves there since the town looks so cute and is close to wurzburg and nurnberg. Suggestions? Leaving next week! Hotel suggestions?

lily,

I don't find that rail access to Rothenburg is "a pain". It's on a "spur line" from Steinach (not electrified as I recall, so it's diesel). There seem to be lots of trips in and out of Rothenburg. Check the bahn.de website for more specific information.

Happy travels!

Trains anywhere in Germany are easy although it takes the 10 minute spurline from Steinbach. You would find it a wonderful experience to overnight in Rothenburg to see the lamplighter and they have inexpensive hostels outside the old town.

It's a little walk into the old town center from the train but very doable. The train that goes to Rhotenburg is a local train and sometimes those take longer than people like.

We've stayed at Pension Posel and were pleased with it. I believe it's one of Rick's recommendations.
