I have booked my 3 day stay in Hotel du Nord et L'Est which is situated near the Republique metro between Anenue de la Repulique and Avenue de la Voltaire. The hotel had good reviews in Tripadvisor.com but now I have been told by a temporary resident (American) that it is not a good or safe area. Since I will be alone returning to the hotel in the evening I am now wondering if I should look elsewhere. I would really appreciate any feedback from anyone familiar with Paris and also any advice on which arrondisement or district I should look into.
ray you posted this in the wrong part of this forum,, i suggest you move it to the "To the West" forum which will cover France. I have not stayed in that area myself,, but do not consider the area particularily dangerous myself. I am sure if you read the reviews people would have stated if they felt unsafe in the area in their reports.
Paris is a fairly safe city for its size, the main thing you will have to be aware of is pickpockets, and they are in any area. Keep only a days cash in your wallet, and do not keep wallet in a back pocket, many men feel an inside shirt pocket that buttons is safer. I travel to Paris alone and feel comfortable in most areas in the central Paris, there are some areas out in the suburbs that are a little less savory,, but as I said, main crime against tourists is pickpocketing. Do not allow yourself to be distracted by commontions on the metro or in crowds,, the pickpockets work in teams,, and yes, even children are used to distract you.
A couple of years ago we stayed two or three blocks from Hotel du Nord et L'Est (closer to Rue de Turbigo). We changed hotels, because we didn't like our room (blood spatter on pillowcase! eeee-yew!)... but I had no trouble with the neighborhood. It is busier and a tad "grittier" than, say, St. Germain des Pres, but I liked the bustly feel. Seemed to be always lots of folks on the street - as an ex-New Yorker, I feel MUCH safer when I am on a busy street. Deserted streets are the ones that scare me. I wouldn't worry about the neighborhood at all, frankly. I think it is more a matter of the area around Place de la Republique being "less glamorous" than other areas of central Paris.
thank you Pat. I really appreciate your feedback totally forgot and posted this q in this forum since my last q was concerning transportation!
Thanks again.
