We will be traveling to Chamonix in early June 2014. The estimated date for the work on the line to be completed is 2014, but I can't see whether the scenic ride is or is not going to be available. We will probably take a train Turin - Switzerland - Chamonix and I just need to be certain we won't get to Montigny and then stuck!

You wouldn't be stuck as there is a very efficient bus that connects Argentiere and Vallorcine (18 minutes). However, you might be in luck. www.sbb.ch does not show the construction symbol and bus on their train schedule after March 21, 2014.
Beth ,Exactly as Larry says . We took the train ( Mont Blanc Express ) from Martigny to Chamonix this past October with the bus leg between Vallorcine and Argentiere as there is ongoing track work . The projected completion is scheduled for March . The main part ( scenic ) is between Chatelard - Frontiere and Martigny through the Trient Gorge , It's SPECTACULAR !! To stay updated , go to tmrsa.ch which is the website of Transport de Martigny et Regions ,the private company that operates the line . There are posted updates on work progress on a regular basis ( in French ) . ENJOY !!!
