Is Lake Como possible within our itinerary?

Dear Help Line,

We will be staying with a friend in Bern, Switzerland and would like to know: When we take the train from Bern to Venice is there a stop that is close to Lake Como??? My husband and I would like to spend a couple hours there, perferably on the way to Venice by train. And where on Lake Como should we visit knowing that we only have a few hours. We have our hotel booked in Venice and want to get there by the late afternoon before it gets dark.

Thank's everyone for replying.

I'm not sure you can do this simply. You need to get to Como station and then get the bus or cab into town. Your best option then is to get the ferry and get off at somewhere you like the look of. Personally I'd go to Bellagio. Be aware though that the ferry takes a couple of hours to go around the lake. If you go to the italiarail site and go to the right hand side and click on timetables. Enter your departure station and arrival station and see what comes up. I did it quickly and it it looks like it's about 6 hours to Como and then another 4 hours back through Milan and onto Venice, so a stop over doesn't look too good.

There's various ferries that takes you around the Lake. I must have taken the slow one like Helen.

My sister who visits multiple times insisted that there's an "express" one that takes you to the destination (ie: Bellagio). Maybe not express direct, but alot faster than the one I took! LOL!

You have to ask which Ferry goes where.

I don't know about getting to lake como, but we're taking a train to venice and stopping in lake garda. it's right next to Verona, and has a lot of the same old architecture and things.

It could be done but you would be so rushed which really defeats the purpose of seeing and being in Lake Como area.
Besides you will want any extra hrs in Venice. Why not leave LC for some other trip. I stay in Varenna and love it. Train from Milan centrale is easy and frequent. you can walk from train station in Varenna to many moderate hotels and pensiones, and 90% of the sights and ferry landing. Everything is so close. hope this helps.
