Ireland rental car advice

We will be renting a car for 10 days in September, pick-up and drop-off at Dublin airport. I have looked up many quotes on kayak, autoeurope, and brand websites. Any suggestions? Also, has anyone purchased the Ireland/UK card for garmin nuvi? We already have a Garmin nuvi and the Ireland/UK card is about $50, which would be cheaper than the 10E/day that most rental companies charge. Also, do we need super CDW or just CDW? Don't really think we need AC in September, but definitely have to have automatic unfortuneately. If you have any insight, it would be much appreciated! thanks

Take the company that gives you the best deal that you can find for now, and keep looking. You never know when a special might appear, and you can cancel your reservation and rebook. You DO need super CDW. In case of damage, you can just turn in the keys and walk away. Without it, you could be on the hook for a significant deductible. You never need AC in a car in Ireland. And yes, you are better off taking your own GPS instead of renting one. You already know how it works, and you can program some destinations ahead of your trip. $50 isn't a bad price for the card. You could sell it on eBay when you are done with it if you don't intend to go back soon.

"You DO need super CDW. In case of damage, you can just turn in the keys and walk away." ........Even the super CDW isn't enough! On our recent trip, Hertz at Shannon charged us 90 euros for some scratches on the hubcap. This despite the fact that the agent in Dublin told us the super CDW covered "everything but blowing out the tyres or putting the wrong fuel in the car." And when you return to the USA, you can't settle the issue with Hertz USA, you have to deal with Hertz Ireland. They don't respond to e-mail, probably guessing correctly that there is a limit to how many hours one will invest to recover 90 euros.

Perhaps that is more a company-specific problem rather than an insurance problem. Others have reported here, though, that some super CDW offers from rental companies don't cover tires and glass. Super CDW policies can vary, too, depending on who the rental company is.
