DUBLIN, Ireland - Air traffic controllers have warned they will shut down Ireland's three major airports for four hours Wednesday in a demand for overdue pay raises.
The Irish Aviation Authority said Tuesday it suspended 15 controllers without pay at the Dublin and Cork airports because they and their union, Impact, refuse to operate recently upgraded air-traffic systems.
Impact said Tuesday the improved systems would mean more stress and work for their members, and refuse to operate them unless bosses honour a 2007 agreement for a 6 per cent pay rise. The controllers also are rejecting demands to begin contributing to their pension policies.
Flights at the Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports are expected to stop from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST) on Wednesday as the controllers stage the walkout.
