We are going to do a little driving via rental car in Slovenia. Do we need the intl drivers license from AAA for that country? Thanks.
Officially, you need both your state drivers license and the IDP in Slovenia. Seeing that English speaking Police may be rare, it is well worth the $15 plus a picture for someone in your party to get one. Now, will you be asked for it by the rental agency, or have to use it, probably not; but best to have it.
Sarah, there has been alot of discussions regarding International Drivers Permits. I would suggest you invest the $15 and get one. You do not want to take the chance of receiving a fine because you do not have one.
I checked the official Slovenia tourism site. Slovenia requires an IDP for residents from outside of the EU. And, as always, an IDP is not a license. You also need your state issued drivers license. The IDP is just a translation; it does not convey any permission to drive.
Well, I guess I would argue that the IDP is more than just a translation. The IDP is a product of negotiated agreements on reciprocity of driving priviledges. There are countries where your US state issued drivers license is useless. The reason that your drivers license is recognized in France (and French licenses here) is because of this agreement. In this respect, the IDP acknowledges that the little card or slip of paper you hand over is indeed a valid drivers license in your country.
