international flights, customs and baggage check thru?

I have gotten two different answers from each of the airlines. My question- Leaving Vienna, Austrian Airlines going to Toronto Pearson International (4hr Layover), then AirCanada onto San Francisco. Will my luggage be checked thru to SF? or will I have to pick up in Toronto and go thru customs? or will I do all in SF? maybe change terminals also in Toronto? I do believe I have time to do all, just don't want to leave my luggage in Canada. Thanks for all the help.

Your baggage will not be checked through to SF. When you arrive in Toronto you will have to pass through Canadian Immigration, collect your bags, pass through Canadian Customs, , "exit" the airport, "reenter" the terminal, go through US Immigration, pass through US Customs, and then drop your checked bags off at the transfer belt (assuming they are already "tagged" for SF). Since you go through US Immigration/Customs in Toronto, your flight from Toronto to SF will be "domestic" so no passport/customs check in SF.

Ok, here's another version flying from Rome to Lisbon, and then on to Philadelphia will baggage be checked through since flights within Europe are considered domestic flights? Or will I have to retrieve luggage in Lisbon and go through customs?

Cathy,
Assuming your connections are on the same ticket/airline/alliance then your bags will be checked all the way through to to your final destination, you collect them in Philly.

Michael, Thank you very much! We booked the tickets through US Airways, and they must have a relationship with TAP in Portugal, because we are flying TAP from Rome to Lisbon, then back to US Airways to Philly. One less thing to worry about!
