International flight luggage question

Hello. I have a luggage question regarding my international flight. We fly home on 8/25 from Greece. Originally the flight was scheduled to land in Dallas and then our connecting flight was to leave Dallas a few hours later en route home to San Diego. American Airlines changed the schedule so now we still fly to Dallas but the next flight home to San Diego isn’t until the following morning on 8/26. When we land in Dallas do we get our luggage, or because it is all on one ticket do they keep the luggage overnight someplace at the airport and then put it in the plane the next morning? Thank you

Definitely a question to be answered by AA.

What are the arrival/departure times at Dallas? The longer the gap,, the less likely they will store the bags (my opinion)

When we land in Dallas do we get our luggage

When you first land in the U.S., you always have to collect your luggage before you go through customs.

Usually, your bag will have a luggage tag that indicates your final destination and you can recheck it after exiting customs. With an overnight flight, it will depend on the airline’s policy as to whether you will be able to recheck that night or if you have to wait until the following morning.

Laura offers good advice. Reach out to AA about rechecking or keeping it with you overnight. You will definitely have to collect it because you always collect luggage when arriving through immigration on your first US arrival.

I have a similar situation but the overnight will still be in international territory. I reached out to KLM and anything over 12 hours you must collect your luggage.

Every scenario and airline is different.

American Airlines changed the schedule so now we still fly to Dallas but the next flight home to San Diego isn’t until the following morning on 8/26.

One other thing …

Since American has changed your schedule, you should be able to request a different flight with a better connection for no charge. I would check to see if there are any other American flights from Athens that day that work better for you. If there are, then contact American and tell them you are not happy with the overnight layover and ask if they can put you on that flight.

Thank you everyone. Your comments have given me a better idea of what to expect. I appreciate it and that’s all I need. Before we left on our trip a few weeks ago we needed a change made to our outgoing flight which i could not change online, and I spent 3.5 hours on hold with AA, went to the San Diego international airport to see if they could help me there ( they could not)… and though I was still on hold with AA at the airport due to a mishap I had to hang up. When I got home I called AA back and selected the “call back” option and they did call back 6 hours later and I got the change made. So I really don’t have a great first impression with calling AA. Your answers have helped me. Thank you!
