Shelley, I don't believe an I.D.P. is compulsory for Germany, but of course it wouldn't hurt to have one (especially given the small cost). You can obtain the Permit in a few minutes at any AMA office. Your nearest AMA office is likely the new one in Sherwood Park (#19 101 Bremner Drive). Note that it's an International Driver's Permit and not a license per se. It must be used in conjunction with your home D.L., so you'll need to pack both. Cheers!
Yes, it is mandatory in Austria, but not in Germany. I'd have one.
Also remember you need to buy a vinette for your car in Austria. It was like 8 euro for 10 days. There are places to buy them right by the boarder.
