Is the International Driver's License required in English-speaking countries? I'll be in England and may rent a car. If the license is just a translation from English into other languages it seems that the IDL wouldn't be necessary.
The UK does not require IDPs.
Hi Swan, we rent a car during every trip to England and have never been asked for an IDL. It's not necessary for England, like you said it's for translation.
I can't imagine needing it. The Permit is essentially just a translation of your DL. I did read an article about Ireland's most ticketed foreigner was something that translates to "name", so I wouldn't be surprised if they require it - but realistically if your DL is in English, there is no need for an IDP.
Check the car rental contract to make sure it is not required. Some jobsworth could refuse to rent to you and charge you no-show fees.
I have rented cars in Ireland, Italy & Germany and have never been asked to produce an IDP in any of them, even though it is a requirement in Italy. I did get one for the times I would be driving in countries that speak a language other than English. I did not get one when I rented in Ireland, as no interpretation would be need.
