My husband is in Rome and 3 days into his 14-day vacation his wallet was stolen before he picked up the rental car. He was able to rent the car, but his int'l DL and US DL were in the wallet. He filed a police report. His daughter and son-in-law are with him and would like him to share in driving but he is afraid to drive without it. Please advise.
I hate to say it, but no license, no driving. It's too big of a risk if he gets pulled over and can't provide his license. Could you overnight a replacement to him of the US DL?
Italy requires an international driving permit, which can't be replaced at this point. Even with his US drivers license, he won't be OK to drive without an IDP.
He cannot legally drive. If he was in an accident, he might be jailed and insurance would be unlikely to cover any claims.
