International Connections

I have always had a direct flight to my destination city in Europe. This spring I will have to make connections in Amsterdam. Is it necessary to claim your luggage and go through immigration and customs there before boarding the next leg of the journey? If so, what is the usual length of time to do this in Amsterdam.
Thanks.

As long as your connecting flight in not on a discount airline, you don't have to reclaim your baggage. If your connecting flight is to another "schengen" country you will go through the immigration check at Schipol Airport on your way to the gate-lines are usually short. In addition all transfer passengers have to go through a complete security check.

Depending on what time of day you arrive at AMS, and the number of other flights arriving in that general time frame, the potential wait at passport control could be up to 30-40 minutes. Take care of this first thing, so you are not rushed for time.
