International Airfare Anomaly

I am starting to track prices for our trip to Europe next summer and noticed for the same itinerary and utilizing the Kayak website, that there is a significant price difference when utilizing a smartphone with the Kayak application installed versus a desktop computer. The difference being $165 less on the smartphone. Is this just an outlier?

I don't know, but it would be interesting to see if that fare is actually available on either one when you tap/click all the way through like you're going to buy a ticket. I like using Kayak about the best compared to others, but I noticed a couple of years back that the fare listed isn't always available once you're redirected to the actual website offering the fare (I don't think this is unique to Kayak). BTW, while I personally use several websites to track fares, I now always buy my ticket directly from the airline's website for a multitude of reasons. Back in the day, the airline sites had fares that were typically higher, but that's not the case anymore.

I agree with Michael about booking directly with the airline. If you book through something like Travelocity, for example, and have a problem, the airline will direct you to the seller (Travelocity). This takes extra time.

I'm another one who only buys tickets directly from the airline.

I do lots of price checking thru numerous web sites but always purchase my tickets directly from the airline. It sure was to my advantage when I arrived at the Seattle airport on Aug 31 with boarding passes for a Lufthansa flight and was told that they were on strike. They certainly took care of TRYING to help us before others who had not booked thru them.

There have been some articles in the tech world recently about how online sellers, including airlines, have figured out how to adjust pricing based on where you live and whether you use a Mac or a PC. Prices for Mac users run a bit higher than for PC users. Shocking but true. I have been on the phone with relatives in Alabama and we are able to simultaneously pull up different prices for the exact same trip on the exact same website.
No idea how this impacts smartphones, but something similar might be at work.

I've found that seeing a price on Kayak and actually getting that price can be two different things. Kayak, I think, reports good prices it finds - but doesn't guarantee the price will be available when you look. I don't think it's bait and switch just that airline prices can be a moving target. I use Kayak to get an idea but don't rely solely on it to find and book flights.

Kayak's one of the preferred websites. I've also had great luck with http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ I'll be watching the fares 4-5 months out, looking for trends. When I'm 60 days prior to leaving, I'll be looking for dips in the rates. That's the least expensive time to buy. Fares go up dramatically on 4/1 and 6/1. Summer, 2013 rates don't appear to be very reasonable. I prefer leaving the last day or two of March. Or, September/October.
