Interlaken to Schilthorn via cable car, bus, train and flying monkey

I don't know if this has been answered as I'm not certain how to search yet yes, a newbie. In Sept. we are visiting Interlaken and want to visit the Schilthorn (for the 007 breakfast). We'll be staying in Interlaken. The way I'm reading the guidebooks, I'll need to take: 1) Train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen 2) Lift from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp 3) Lift from Grutschalp to Murren 4) Lift to Schilthorn for breakfast 5) Return lift to Birg as we want to hike down partially. 6) Hike to Brunli, Sprutz Waterfall & Gimmelwald 7) Lift from Gimmelwald to Stechelburg Post 8) Bus from Stechelburg Post to Lauterbrunnen
9) Train from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken This seems excessive but there doesn't appear to be a website with much info on cable cars? Help?!?

When you see it you will understand. You can see the connectinos on the Schilthorn website, www.schilthorn.ch and also on the Swiss transport website, rail.ch
Your list is correct except for # 3. From Grutschalp to Mürren you go by train. It is a very short distance (2 km or so) and makes a pleasant walk if you would rather to that. All the connections are very smooth-they are timed to work with one another so you just walk from one to the next. From the Mürren train station (Mürren BLM) to the cablecar station (Mürren LSMS) you walk through the town.

Can this be accomplished on one pass or do I buy individual tickets for each. I saw a Swiss Pass but couldn't make head or tail of it? Any idea of the costs?

Lane, Given the fact your destination is the Schilthorn / Piz Gloria, I'd suggest using the other route. This is the method I'd use: > From Interlaken Ost (east), buy a ticket to the Schilthorn (return from Lauterbrunnen or Mürren?). > Take the local Berner Oberland train (blue & gold, as I recall) from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen. When you get off the train, walk across the street and transfer to the Post Bus (you can't miss it, it's bright yellow - it's timed to arrive with the train). > Take the Post Bus to Stechelberg - you'll disembark at the Cable Car station - walk up the steps, through the turnstile and get on the Cable Car. > The first leg of the Cable Car is a bit steep, but spectacular. Be sure you have your Camera ready! The first stop is Gimmelwald. Get off and walk across the platform to the next Cable Car, which will take you to Mürren. > When you reach Mürren, get off the Car, walk across the platform and get on the next Cable Car. > When you reach Birg, get off the Car, walk across the platform and get on the next Cable Car. > Last stop is the Schilthorn. You'll see the distinctive appearance as you approach. NO, it did not explode! If you're so inclined, you can stop in the James Bond Bar after breakfast for a "Martini, shaken not stirred". For a more memorable route down to the valley (rather than a boring hike), you check with your Hotel and find out if they're still offering Paragliding from the Schilthorn. Arrange to meet the Pilots at convenient time, and you'll experience the area in a different way than most tourists! Happy travels!

Ken is suggesting you go up via the Stechelberg/Gimmelwald route instead of down as in your plan. I personally like the counterclockwise loop that you have already listed (up via Mürren, down via Gimmelwald). The station in Interlaken will sell you a round-trip ticket for the whole journey, including a deduction for the part that you wish to walk down (Birg to Gimmelwald). If you change you mind about hiking, you will have to pay for a ticket for that part at some point. We faced that situation on other lifts in Switzerland and they allowed us to board the cablecar and then pay at the bottom when we got off. The prices for the various sections and routes from Interlaken are shown on the Schilthorn website. I'm thinking it is 91 CHf if you have no applicable Swiss pass, but I don't recall if that is from Interlaken or from Lauterbrunnen.

Thanks so much Lola! We have to hike down, not up, due to some physical limitations.

Maybe it's too late for this. But. This itinerary is a perfect argument for staying in the mountains (Murren or Gimmelwald), not Interlaken. Roll out of bed, walk to the list, and go. From Interlaken, by the time you get to the summit it will be lunchtime.
