We are leaving on Tuesday morning for Muerren via Zurich and have 1st class Swiss passes. After our stay in Muerren we will travel to Milan but need to buy point to point tickets from some point in Switzerland.
I had intended to use the Swiss pass for the furthest point - Brig or Spiez - and then get the ticket from there but I have noticed that my Siwss pass may not be valid or that I may have to pay 50% of the fare. If I have to buy a ticket from Interlaken to Milan that is fine but I am just interested to make sure we get the maximum out of our passes and pay the minimum fare possible.
It may make sense to go to Luzern and get the train from there but I think that would be backtracking. Thanks for your help.
I am not sure exactly how it would work, but I was just in Switzerland and had a youth pass and had to make some confusing connections and trips that wern't covered or where there was a discount. All the train stations I was at (even the small towns like Lauterbrunnen) there were very helpful agents, all I did was give them my pass and tell them where I wanted to go and they would give me a couple routes with prices. They can print off times and prices, they were so helpful also I found almost everyone at the train stations and airports in Switzerland very friendly, all speaking english!
Thanks Cora. I am glad you you at least experienced what I thought regarding the Swiss Pass. At least we know what to expect and I will get my ticket at one of the stations there.
We just did the reverse route Milan->Muerren and we had to buy a ticket from Milan to Brig. Brig to Muerren was covered with the Swiss Pass. But like the previous reviewer said, just go to any Swiss ticket counter, and they can tell you exactly what you need to buy...they are extremely helpful, knowledgeable and usually friendly.
Muerren is a great place. Have fun.
Thanks, Tim. Your experience helps. I was looking at getting a ticket from Brig, using my Swiss Pass to that point so that works but I will check with the train station attendants.
We went from Milan to Murren with a Swiss Pass. Our travel agent bought a ticket for Milan to Brig and then the Swiss Pass took over. I was glad we already had the ticket vs. buying it there because we didn't have to change trains--we just stayed on the train during its' stop.
Coming from the other way, your SP would get you to Brig and then you would have to get off and buy a ticket if you don't have it in advance. Our stop was very short. My advice is to buy it ahead of time.
