Interlaken to Fussen, fastest route

We're trying to find the quickest route from Interlaken, Switzerland to Fussen Germany. (it looks like by car it should take about 5 hours). The only train routes I come across consist of many switches and 8-10 hours hours. We would consider renting a car, but are nervous about that and worry that it would be too complicated. Are there any bus routes that would get you there in a decent amount of time? Any suggestions on car rental? Thanks for any info!

According to the timetables at www.bahn.de, you can leave at 07:01 and arrive at 13:59 with only three changes. Or you can leave at 11:01 and arrive at 17:57 with only three changes. And if you book either one of those routes well in advance (up to 90 days allowed) at bahn.de, you should be able to get a Europa-Spezial Schweiz fare as low as 39€.

Click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner for English. After you get summary timetables for Interlaken-Fuessen, look for "Check availability" in the Savings fares column on the far right. Return to your summary timetables and click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points for each route.

I drove a route in the opposite direction, from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Interlaken. There probably is no quick, direct route. From GaP, I drove by Fuessen, north towards Seeg, then west by various highways and country roads to Lindau (great halfway mark to stop for a meal!), through a sliver of Austria to the Swiss border, then along the E60 and E41 through Zurich (I would have done better to go around the city), south to Luzern, and from here, through the mountains to Interlaken. I can't guarantee this is the fastest route for driving, but at worst, the scenery was merely pretty, and at best, breathtaking.

And by the way, navigating by Swiss and German roads is fairly easy, as long as you know the names of the towns in your direction of travel. European road signs direct you towards a town, not in a geographical vector.

Also remember that if you rent a car in Switzerland and drop it in Germany there will probably be a large extra dropoff fee. If you need a car in Germany take the train to a town that is easy to get to in Germany and rent a car there.

I would like to go from Fussen to Interlaken and was considering crossing over into Austria, then into Liechtenstein and stay the night in Vaduz or close by. Then travel into Switzerland the next day and take M3 south toward Italy and get onto N2 and go over Furka Pass and on to Interlaken. Has anyone take this route and are the roads over the Alps in good shape and would one feel safe driving them, etc.

I haven't taken this exact route (and I can't see on the map exactly which route you mean), but don't worry about the conditions of roads anywhere Switzerland. "Shoddy" and "poorly maintained" are not terms often associated with anything Swiss! The roads that cut through the Alps are generally safe, but they have many sharp turns and tunnels, so drive carefully.

Thanks to Tom for the reply to my question about road conditions while driving through the Swiss Alps. Sorry for the delay in reading and responding. Just lost a close friend, and am now getting to this. Thanks again.
