Interim stops on a journey

Does anyone know if you can purchase a point-to-point ticket and make a stop enroute, catching a later train to complete your journey? We want to go from Rome to La Spezia with a stop in Pisa and need to know if we have to buy two tickets to allow for time in Pisa.

Hi Jeane. It depends on type of train. There are two types - 1. Regional and 2. All other (Intercity, Freccia...). The type is shown on trenitalia.com. 1. For Regional (Regionale Veloce), your ticket is good for a time period (usually 6 hours) and route, and you can get on an off any Regional train on that route during that time, but your ticket is ONLY valid on Regional trains.
2. For other, your ticket is only good on that exact train and time, and includes a seat reservation. Since one of your legs from Rome will be a non-Regional train, you can't use the same ticket all the way. If you are stopping in Pisa, just buy the Pisa to La Sp ticket right before you board. Enjoy your trip!

Thank you. I had pretty much come to the conclusion that just purchasing separate tickets would be easiest. As we will be returning to Rome from LaSpezia I was thinking of a round trip ticket for the one in our party who does not have a rail pass, but just getting separate tickets for each leg seems simpler in this situation.
