If I miss a reserved train ticket, can I get on the next train?

We will has a tight schedule as we land at the airport in Milan and make our way to a cruise departure in Savona. If I purchase a ticketless ticket for the 12:10 train and we miss it, can we use this ticket for the next train?

Also, how do we VALIDATE an e-ticket. From other things I've read, it appears that validating train tickets before boarding in the yellow machine is a must.

You do NOT validate an e-ticket in the machine. You show it to the conductor on board. If you miss your train, you can go to the ticket window and exchange your ticket at no charge for any train departing witin three hours of your original departure time.
