Ideas for travel from Rome/Florence to Siena and Cinque Terre

Hello everyone, we have a family of four trip planned starting in Rome, then Florence then Cinque Terre in June. We also want to see some hill towns like Siena and San Gimignano. I am trying to figure out if we should drive from Rome, stop in at Siena and San G (with our luggage in the car?) then head to Florence. Or, we could take some transport (train, car?) from Florence to the the hill towns and somehow end up back at a train station to continue outer trip to Cinque Terre. Again, we’ll have light luggage. Any ideas?

Thanks so much!

For various reasons, you don’t want to be dealing with a car in Rome, Florence, or Cinque Terre. Best to use a train among them. For CT, you would take a train to La Spezia, then either a local train or a ferry to visit the five towns. Siena can be reached by bus from Florence (or train, but bus is preferable). You would benefit from having a car when exploring the Tuscan countryside.

Yes, thank you. I think it makes sense to rent a car on the way out of Rome if we need too. I am wondering if there is a private transportation that can take us around but that might be expensive.
