Has anyone booked with Alaska using miles on their partner Icelandair? I have been reading some very bad reviews about how they handle carry on baggage, forcing passengers to check bags that fall within their guidelines. changing paid for seat assignments and so on. Any feedback?
Thanks!
Debra
I’ve done Icelandair with Alaska miles several times. Like most carriers, you will pay for seat assignments for preferred seats or extra legroom seats. The food is not great. Most people bring their own but there is food available for purchase.
One advantage of Icelandair with Alaska has traditionally been low mileage redemptions and low fees. One perk is that you can now earn Alaska points (miles) on frequent flyer flights.
I have seen them check the size of carryons at some airports and completely ignore at others.
We have used Alaska miles to fly Iceland Air without issue and would do so again. Our carryon bags were allowed, not a problem. Perhaps sometimes with a completely full flight they are required to check carryons that would normally be allowed but that is the same with any airline in my experience.
We have done this quite a few times. It is pretty much airport dependent as to whether or not the bags are scrutinized for size/weight. Here at SEA, my last few trips to Iceland they have made every bag, Saga class included, go into the sizer and be weighed. This is done again at the gate if there is any question. I have not seen people forced to check bags that did not comply, but just because I have not seen that doesn't mean it can't/won't happen of course. We have only had our seat assignments changed once, and that was because our flight was cancelled and we were put on an earlier flight. I will say they were great at how they handled that. We go to Iceland quite a bit, and just returned again last month.
Thank you all for your input it has eased my mind greatly!
I’ve done it 3 times. No problem with seats and baggage. Often the schedule with miles is not the best and when I looked recently, the mileage required was outrageous. Check several dates
