Iceland Express

Icelandair's monopoly on flights between the U.S. and Iceland is soon coming to an end.

Beginning next June, Iceland Express, the nation's budget airline, will begin 4x a week service between Newark and Reykjavic.

The only downside is that as of now it looks like the 5 1/2 hour flight will be on 737's.

I’ve flown on Icelandair’s equipment before. The 757 is larger than the 737, but there really isn’t a noticeable difference for economy passengers in terms of cabin space/comfort. I’ve also flown some 5 hour non-stops on 737s from east coast to west and found them to be manageable. If the price were right, I’d do it…nice to see a little competition on that route.

The continuing flight from Iceland to Continental Europe is on a B757 then. Both are single-aisled and it doesn't really make a difference. Just make sure you compare the full trip costs as e.g. Iceland Express's Frankfurt airport actually is Hahn.

Andreas...I think you're confusing Iceland Express and Icelandair. Iceland Express flies 737's on all its routes. Icelandair flies 757's.

Did a booking with Iceland Express. The fares are just to tempting. Seems they charge for seat reservations.

Anybody had a chance go try them out. I think they only started flying the Newark-Europe route June 2010. How was it?

Thanks!

I would advise anyone thinking about booking through Iceland Express to not do it!!!
I was supposed to leave this Saturday and they cancelled on me today. This is the second time this summer that they cancelled a flight that I was supposed to take.
They have said that due to the volcano they had to cut down on some flights...but 2 days before I am supposed to leave???
THey told me they "will look into it today" when I called this morning. i haven't heard back from them.
There have been numerous complaints online and it seems that this happens regularly.
Book with caution if you choose to!

Oh no. Sorry to hear that. Now I'm getting real worried with our trip, just a few weeks away.

So they simply tell you the flight is cancelled, and not even assure you that you can be on the next flight? How do you handle your hotel/rail/car reservations to your destination? That's what so worrisome.

I've been monitoring the flight from Newark, and seems that the flights are delayed for a few hours, but still manages to leave the same day.
