Iberia for worst airline - Problem Solved

Just found out today tha Iberia cancel two of my return flights to the US for later this year. Both flights were connections in Madrid heading back to the States.

The first one I found out about, Iberia scheduled my connecting flight leaving Madrid for 1 day earlier than when I arrive in Madrid. Iberia is unwilling to change my flight although they still have one option for purchase that departs from Madrid and would get me home. Iberia declined to refund my purchase cost. I am trying to work up the supervisory chain at Iberia to see if I can get this resolved or if am just SOL.

The second one, was booked on miles through American Airline, Iberia cancel the return flight from Madrid and did not tell American Airlines. I am working with American Airlines to try to get a flght back home but may not know for a bit.

I will post the resolution to these two cancellations.

If you are using Iberia you may want to check to see if they did the same thing to you.

Gee! Keep us posted. I haven't tried Iberia, but heard it's popular for local flights.

I flew them from Mad to Paris this spring and it went just fine so not everyone has this experience.

And AA is hardly "perfect" they do this kind of trick too. And "they didn't tell AA" Hmm.. AA has these things called computers that are connected with Iberia's. There's not "telling" involved. That's AA 'dropped ball' There system should have updated with Iberia's changes.

Now I agree Iberia should refund you your money, but if you have already flown the flight to Europe it gets harder. Are you trying to get a refund on the entire ticket or just the return?

It's one of the "risks" of buying in advance in today's market. With the finanical pressure airlines are under changes are more likely then not.

Hi Edwin, ask Iberia for their "Contract of Carriage" (sometimes called Conditions of Carriage). These are basically the rules that you agreed to when you purchased, and the airline has to provide them to you by law.

*Most airlines have a specific rule about delays or changes as significant as yours, and guidelines they must follow. In the case of changing more than one day, many airlines (not all) will offer refunds in their C.o.C..

Get the document from them, and read the section on changes. What they are willing to offer for compensation will be outlined there.

It may not be the info you want to hear - but at least you will know your rights with them, and can push for appropriate compensation.

Update,

Both tickets cover flights during September and October of this year. Iberia recently cancelled a number of flights from Madrid to the States starting in late September and beyond. These Iberia chanages and others over the last several months have affect flights along the entire east coast (Miami, DC, New York and Boston.

1 - I have a liason officer working with me on the first one and may hear back tomorrow morning.

2 - I found out on the second one that Iberia put me on a return flight to Boston when my original arrival city was Washington, DC where I live. At least the flight from Madrid is on the same day I get into Madrid. The arrival in Boston prevents me from catching a flight to get back to DC unless I spend the night in Boston and fly back the next day. Nothing against Boston. An American liason officer is trying to get Iberia to put me on the flight to JFK with American picking up the tab (not charging me) to fly me from JFK to DC.

Airlines that charge for extras are not the worst ones. The worst ones are where you get blind-sided with schedule changes and they do not protect you on a comparable flight but they do allow you to buy a new ticket if you want and not get a refund. Even Ryanair is better than that.

Hope it works out for the best for you. Glad to hear American is helping (one reason I like to buy with a US airlnie - even if I know the flight is operated by a different one - easier to work with.).

The first one was resolved today. It took about 12 calls in total and staying on the line with multiple individuals to get the flight back to DC on the same day as originally scheduled. Two days to get it resolved. Glad I was not on the road when it happened.

Nothing back on the second on so far.
